The madness of war

The First World War of 1914-1918 claimed millions of victims. Hundreds of square kilometres of territory were destroyed. Entire villages were wiped out and never rebuilt. Millions of men were away from home for years fighting for their homeland.

On the home front and in the occupied villages, the women kept society going as best they could. But life also went on at the front. Behind the trenches they ate and drank, soldiers made music, they drew or did woodwork. They wrote letters home and made new friends in the field hospital.

Museum Romagne 14 -18 exhibits an extensive collection of personal objects from WWI. Owner Jean-Paul de Vries found them in the fields, woods, fields, gardens and barns around Romagne-sous-Montfaucon. They are silent witnesses, which depict the madness of the war effort in a penetrating way.
